Fitting out the stern section.

The stern section is constructed in the fabrication shed and then put into the dock and floated around to the small drydock for fitting out. The only auxiliaries fitted at that time are the ship side valves as seen below to make the unit watertight.

This photo shows the hydraulic ships side valves in the starboard forward corner of the engine room. They are the sea suctions for ballast pump, fire pump, and fresh water generator pump.

The valves are chained together so they cannot be accidentally opened before they are in the drydock.

The pumps are installed and the pipe work is being fabricated and fitted. A: Ballast pump, B: S.W. cooling for F.W. Generator, C: F.W. generator ejector pump, D & E: Deckwash and fire pump, F & G: Main S.W. cooling pumps, H: S.W. cooling for refrig. units, I & J: S.W. cooling for alternators.

Plate coolers and pump
When all the large units are installed on the tank top then the next deck is welded in position as shown here. The left photo shows the plate coolers and jacket water pumps for alternators. The right photo shows the freshwater generator, and M.E. jacket water pumps with jacket water coolers and lub oil coolers.

The photo on the left shows the forward end of the engine room with the door to the duct keel. Photo on the right shows some of the pumps. In the centre with the tank isare the camshaft lub oil pumps, and the same type of pumps are used for turbo-blower lub oil pumps and main engine fuel booster pumps.

This photo shows the stern section ready for the dock to be flooded and it will be towed around to the building dock.
