Reardon Smith Newsletters

The RSL Newsletter ran from 1969 to 1985: the first one was issued in December 1969, and was apparently the idea of Bob Chatterton, before he actually became Chairman of the Company. The final issue was sent out in June 1985, when the company was wound up.
A total of 186 editions were printed, though due to three numbering errors in their production, the sequence runs from 1 to 183.
Together with Ships Mail and the Sunday Newspapers, the Newsletters were eagerly awaited when arriving in port, particularly after a long sea-passage. There would always be a quick perusal of the Officer List to see who was sailing on what and who with; they opened up a link with the whole fleet and Devonshire House. Sadly, they were not replaced when the company became solely a management concern.

September 1974 was the first issue printed by outside printers. Due to economic restraints, issues 106 and onwards were again printed “in house”.
