The Tacoma City was built by Upper Clyde Shipbuilding Ltd. at the Govan Yard and was Yard/Hull No.116. This was the sixth of the seven 840 class vessels built for Reardon Smith.

Maiden voyage: Sailed Glasgow 7th April 1972. Arrived Antwerp 10th April and delivered on T/C to Steelwood Carriers Inc. Sailed 15th April with a cargo of steel for discharge W.C.U.S.A. Sails Panama Canal 29th April and arrives Los Angeles 8th May. Then calls Oakland, Portland, Seattle, completing at Vancouver B.C. about 24th May.
