Eastern City (5)

Installation of rudder assembly and stern section

The rudder is completely built up under cover in the fabrication shed and the rudder stock is also fitted.
The anodes are fitted and it is then painted.
The total weight is 70.3 tons.

When required it was brought out into the building dock and put into position ready for the upper after deck to be lowered into position over the rudder stock.

In this photo the rudder assembly is aligned and in position.

Lowering the stern over the rudder stock

In this photo on the left it can be seen that the stern section is now lined up with the main steel work, and a large baulk of timber holds up the stern part. When all the welding is completed the rudder stock will be pulled up in position and attached to the steering gear.

Here we can see all the stern section and welding of the stern section continues as it is welded to the other sections.

It is difficult to see in this photo but the outline of the name "Eastern City" has already been bead welded on the stern.
The square opening is the garbage shute. In port the rubbish could be plced in the tank and then when far enough out to sea the gate could be lifted and the rubbish released. This would not be allowed today.
