Coniston Water

Peter Jones has kindly sent us a copy of the account of the sinking of the Coniston Water, written by his father, John Ifor Jones, in 1980. He died in 1986.

Although he continued to complete his apprenticeship on RSL ships, he was eventually obliged to give up seagoing because of the injury sustained to one of his feet, when he jumped into the lifeboat at the time of the sinking. However, he then worked in the Cardiff Office until 1928, and as a consequence, he wrote two letters to the company in 1979 enquiring about old colleagues. Both were printed in the Newsletters for March and April of that year, and can be found as below:-

Peter has also made available to us, a copy of the Indentures that his father signed in 1915. They are especially interesting as they contain the signatures of some of the early directors of W.R Smith and Sons. We are extremely grateful to Peter Jones for these items.
These two items can be found on Memories pages 2 and 3.
