I remember way back in April 1974, Evan was due to be my best man but was unfortunately called back to sea.
He sent a wedding gift with the following message which was the Evan I will always remember.
He signed off as Scratch which was his nickname at the time.
If sailors tales to sailors tunes,
Storm and adventure, heat and cold;
If schooners, islands and maroons
And Buccaneers and buried gold,
And all the old romance, record
Exactly in the ancient way,
Can please, as me they pleased of old,
The wiser youngsters of today.
Best wishes to you both. Scratch.

R.I.P. Evan
Myself and Evan flew from Japan to L.A. to join if I recollect the Houston City which was due to berth in Ensenada Mexico sometime around 71-73.
Arriving in L.A. our problems started as we seemingly did not have the correct paperwork to leave the U.S.A.
We where holed up in a L.A. hotel for approximately 7 days before flying down to Tijuana Mexico, joining a bus there for Ensenada. John C Gardiner. Posted on forum 20 May 2013.

I was very saddened to hear the news that Evan had crossed the bar. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. Evan was a very well respected individual in the company and left a lasting impression on many of us with his somewhat eccentric humour, his companionship and his dedication to good seamanship.
Things were a little different in the 70’s that’s for sure. I had been the RSL Celtic Bulk Carriers Port Captain for close to 5 years and I needed a change, so after chatting with my boss, Capt. Jack Lemon, he said that we should both go home and right down 3 names of current "youngish" Chief Officers that would be a suitable replacement to go charging around everywhere attending ships. The next morning we compared notes and Evan was the only one on both of our lists. So, to cut a long story short Evan was flown home and I spent a month or so with him travelling around introducing him to all the stevedores and agents etc. in all the Euro ports we called at and attending a number of RSL and Irish Shipping vessels…generally just having a good time!! We also had one very memorable visit to Dublin to meet all the Irish Shipping crowd...the good old days!

My sincere condolences to his family. It is always sad to hear that another shipmate has crossed the bar. Regards Michael Burt. Posted on forum 23 May 2013.
RIP Old friend
Evan did his first trip to sea on the ;Leeds City; in October 1961,He joined and I rejoined the ship in Belfast. It was a memorable 7 months with Robin Stuarts 21st birthday at sea included.
Although I never sailed with Evan again we were friends in Cardiff in the 70's and then after I moved to the US he would send me letters about past and present exploits.
At one stage I got him on to our payroll as a surveyor in Mexico (Global Maritime)
After years of him asking me to visit him in North Wales,I finally made it to his Gate house last November.I passed his front door with my GPS saying 2 miles to go !!!!
He stood in the road to stop me going past his house again and he told me the Ambulance had done the same one time.
So the Doctors wanted him to move closer to Bangor/Hospitals etc, .I gather that this place was not as good as his gate house and it also made him a little depressed. Plus his mobile phone didn/t work and neither did his internet. He got a landline just before he died but never had time to get the number out to friends. I asked an old Radio Op - Dai Davies to track him down but he had no luck either. As we were trying to get him to come to the reunion last weekend in Derby
On arrival at Leightons last Friday he told me the news that had just come in on the forum
I changed my plans and attended his funeral in Bangor last Tuesday morning
It was a very short service with 2 hymns 1 in English and 1 in Welsh with an eulogy from a friend Canon Ellis as Evans oldest frien was afraid he would break down if he did it
His Niece thanked me for attending and since then I have received a copy of the Eulogy and have passed it on to those on my email list, I am poor at forwarding these things so someone please post it on here for me
I was advised that his ashes would be scattered on his favourite mountain top. Peter Bloomfield. Posted on forum 23 May 2013.
