Phil Tate
I started as RSL engineer cadet in 1982 at the Fairwater college in Cardiff. After a year there I sailed on both the Amparo and the Skeena before returning to college in Glasgow.
On obtaining my 4th class certificate I was laid off from RSL, and then sailed with Cayzer Irvine for a number of years before coming back with Cardiff Ship Management and sailing on the Tepozteco (3 times), Aya II, Lerma and Bibi.
By then I had my Chiefs ticket and moved to pastures new with P&O Bulk, where I spend several years and then a few various management agencies before taking a job as Superintendent in Tokyo with MOL.
In 2001 I moved to Canada to work for VShips in Montreal, and in 2004 I moved to Toronto where I hope to remain for a good few years yet.
I joined my first ship, the Amparo in Toronto in 1983, and 26 years later I'm settled here with my family, strange world. I'm only glad I didn't join the Amparo in Coatzacoalcos !!
