New Westminster City (3)

Yes I remember Julian York. We sailed together on the 1955 vintage New Westminster City. I was doing my last trip as an apprentice and Julian was 3/O. We joined the ship in New York in the latter half of 1968. I don't have the exact dates as they don't appear on my indentures, but we were away for about 7 months on a States Marine charter.
We loaded general cargo in varioius ports on the east coast of the States for discharge in S. Africa and Persian Gulf, then backloaded for the States.
The personnel I recall were O.J.T.Lindsay, Master, JJ Kalnins Mate, P Bloomfield 2/O, Julian 3/O and myself.
As senior apprentice I usually managed to get myself on the same watch as Julian. He was a good teacher and I learned a lot from him. We also enjoyed our leisure time with frequent runs ashore for "a few sherberts!"

The last time I saw him was in Cardiff when he was up for his master's and I was up for my mate's ticket.
On the morning of his orals I agreed to give him a lift into the exam centre. Would you believe my car refused to start so there followed frantic pushing to bump start it! If his nerves weren't on edge to begin with, they certainly were by the time I dropped him off at the bottom of Bute Street.
After masters he went back to sea and we never met up again, but I do have some happy memories of him and some good runs ashore. It's nice to hear he's well and settled in a nice part of the country.Wynford Phillips. Posted on the forum 8th October 2011.

I remember joining the New Westminster City in Houston in 1968 as a deck apprentice loading machinery and I think rice.
Our voyage was to the Persian Gulf; where we spent July and August unloading into barges with local labor living and eating on deck, as did we with no air conditioning. If I remember correctly we had to sail and register at a port and wait to get barges and permission to unload. We did the actual unloading; I worked 12 on and 12 off with the 2nd Mate Evan Walmsley, who I believe eventually became a superintendent in the office.
Once finished in the Gulf we sailed to the Red Sea, Mombasa and Tanger loading coffee and wild animals for New York. Martyn Hammond. Posted on the forum 30th May 2012.

Well Martyn...I`ve got the cargo plans and some vivid memories of that voyage.
Like you, I`ve only just discovered all this "Blasts from the past " stuff and
not too sure what I`m supposed to do next here. Evan Walmsley. Posted on Forum 24th July 2012.
