Indian City (3)

November 1956 to May 1957. I joined this vessel as first trip Second Mate,(with a brand new 2nd Mates ticket!) under Captain Joe Thornhill. The third Mate was Dave Cobley but other Officers long forgotten.
It was with some trepidation that I reported on board as Capt Thornhill was known as strict but fair who didn't suffer fools gladly. He ran a tight ship. I do recall we had a Mate from the Pool who really enjoyed his "apple juice" and who soon incurred the wrath of the O.M. The result of which, I quickly learned the Mates job.
We started off from Victoria Docks and proceeded out to Tampa, Fla. to load Phosphate for Sakaide, Japan. Thence, down to W.Australia and loaded grain back to London. Upon completion discharge at Poplar, we took her over to Rotterdam where we handed her over to new Owners
A few years later I joined the "Leeds City" as Mate, again with Capt Thornhill, for a twelve month voyage. I can only say that I found him an excellent Master to sail with. The 2nd Mate there was a chap called J. C. Lee. Anyone remember him? John Cann.
