Orient City (4)

Joined Orient City in Vancouver August 1977. Spent a week or so loading grain for China - had the chance to visit Grouse Mountain, saw Vancouver Whitecaps play LA Aztecs with some of my old favourite player, sadly past it! Toured Stanley Park.
Holiday over, crossed to China saw and walked start of Great Wall of China at Chingwantao.
Back to Vancouver, continued hectic social Calendar, back to Dalien Port Arthur had a good tour of Seamen's Club and true Chinese Cooking. Down to Australia at Dampier to load Iron Ore for Japan - had some Australian culture (Tinnies), and met somebody from the Charterers/Shippers who had worked for RSL. Was it Graham? Nothing exciting in Japan, down to Mackay where we loaded Anthracite (and some Castlemaine XXXX) for Discharge at Port Talbot. Cheaper to ship the stuff 13000 miles from Mount Isa than to get it out of the ground at Glyncorrwg 10 miles from the steel works. Stopped off at Esperance due to Capt. Pete Burroughs having appendicitis - On Christmas Eve. So disappointing that we weren't allowed ashore. Had to wait for Robin Stuart to fly out as Relief Master.
Made it to Port Talbot in February 1978, and had to anchor off for several days in Swansea Bay. The nearest I ever got to my home port of Swansea.
Amongst those on our Thomas Cook tour of the World were Ken Bonzo Jones, P J Prendergast, Tiny Evans, Kevin Warner, Barry Everett, Pete Tyerman and Danny Trigg. (Other Crew members are available if required!). What a wonderful experience and certainly the best times to experience the British Merchant Navy. John Cullen. Posted on forum 4 December 2011.
