Fresno City in drydock

The vessel in the drydock at Brigham and Cowans, South Shields. In the back ground is Smith's Dock at North Shields with what looks like a fleet auxillary tanker and a BP tanker. Photo copyright © Paul Strathdee.

The shipyard as it is today as a marina

This photo shows what has replaced Brigham and Cowans drydock.
You cannot get the angle of the original photo because what was the head of the dock is now luxury appartments surrounded by high and dense trees.
The dock is now a marina and the road to the right of centre would be crossing  just forward of the ships accommodation.
Smiths at N. Shields is now being prepared for what I assume is more housing.
The five docks have been filled in and there is nothing left whatever to tell you that this was once a booming ship repair area. I recall seeing an aerial photo in the early 60s of Smiths and there was 14 ships at the yard some of them lying three deep at the quayside. So much for progress. Colin Gateshill. 9 July 2012.
