Come this September, it`ll be 51 years since I joined my first ship as apprentice in Belfast.
She was the "Leeds City" and was undergoing a change to her load-line.No entries in my
Discharge Book -only .....Issued on entry into the Merchant Navy 29th. Sept. 1961 Belfast.
And the finest apprenticeship it was too.
Two trips on the "Leeds" ; a stand by on the "Vancouver";a long trip on the "Orient"
Two trips on the "Great" and signed off the "King" as Quarter Master in May 1965. Time served.

Silly me....I was back out as 3rd. Mate on the "New Westminster" by October and stayed with
her for 19 months...time and enough in- to put my "papers in" for 1st. Mate Foreign Going. On paying off in Avonmouth,Willy Cross joined as 1st. trip Master and I signed back on (Home Trade) 3rd.Mate around the coast to Manchester. We did things like that in those days.Seafaring was FUN.
(so was the whole summer I spent climbing the peaks around Chamonix)

One year and a day after leaving the "New Westminster"..we signed on the"Atlantic"in Port Elizabeth.
On looking back now, it`s plain to see that a seachange in ships and men was well underway.
..and I`ve gone on long enough too. Ev. Walmsley. Posted on forum 27 August 2012.
